Painting and decorating rates increase over the past year

Published: 04/05/2023

The annual review of the BCIS Painting and decorating data set shows that trade prices rose by around 6% on average in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period last year due to the resource cost increases for painters and decorators.

This is a similar level to inflation in painting and decorating costs, as measured by the BCIS Price Adjustment Formulae Indices, 3/48 Finishes: Painting and Decorating, which showed an annual growth of 6.6% in January 2023.

The BCIS painting and decorating dataset provides guide prices for redecoration work in existing properties as well as for decoration work in new buildings. It includes internal and external work and a full range of surface treatments.

The latest edition of the BCIS painting and decorating dataset has been reviewed and updated to account for all changes to resource costs and wage rates, up to January 2023.
